Big Dig project members visited two local schools to tell the children about archaeology and especially about Saxons in Fishtoft. Members of the team visited Hawthorn Tree Primary school and Fishtoft Primary School with a variety of activities designed by Jules Agnew of Heritage Trust of Lincolnshire.
Visit to Hawthorn Tree Primary School
Jules, Rachael and Neil visited Hawthorn Tree Primary school in early July.
A sunny Wednesday in July saw Jules training up the new generation of archaeologists.
Pupils from the school tried their hand at making pots – with some budding potters and some who just seemed to be really enjoying themselves!
Neil, as always, proved to be a bit of a star dressed as a ‘Saxon warrior’ (or as he would have us believe, a Saxon warrior disguised as an archaeologist the rest of the time).
There were also some very good questions, such as ‘Were all Saxons bald?’. Answers on a postcard... or forum.
Pupils also tried their hand at excavating a test pits.
A display of the things the pupils made will be on show at Fishtoft Church on Saturday and Sunday (including a brilliant model of Saxon Fishtoft!).
