A number of archaeological activities took place during the weekend of the 23rd and 24th of July 2005. There were activities for all the family, young and old, no matter what their interest.
These included;
Excavation: volunteers had the opportunity to find out what’s beneath their garden and learn the skills of an archaeologist through test pit excavation
Geophysical Survey: throughout the weekend a number of sites were be explored by geophysical survey, there were opportunities for people to learn how this technique, made famous by Time Team works, and even have a go at it themselves.
Fieldwalking: there was the chance to find new archaeological sites by examining nearby fields
Finds Identification: learning what happens and how to identify the pottery and animal bones that are found during the excavation from the experts
Environmental Archaeology: through augering we began to learn how the different soil types can help to build up a story of how Fishtoft once might have looked
Re-enactment: see what type of food an average Saxon would have eaten and the goods which he/she might have made
Incident Room and Displays: throughout the weekend there will be an updated interactive display of the results of the test pit excavations, geophysical survey and fieldwalking results, as well as an opportunity to see displays of previous excavations
Lectures: a number of talks were given during the weekend on the Big Dig and the History of the village... more to come
